A LITTLE HISTORY

Back between 1939 and 1945 many Americans flew to Ireland in a flying boat. The sea planes landed at Foynes harbour, in the midwest of Ireland. The passengers then took a cold wet boat ride to the Shannon Airport.

This gave Joseph Sheridan, the chef at Shannon Airport an idea. He would treat the newly arrived cold wet Americans to a little Irish hospitality, with an American twist. He knew of their taste for coffee, so he added whiskey to their coffee instead of the Irish way of adding it to tea. One of the pleasantly surprised soldiers asked “Is this Brazilian coffee?”, “No” was Joe’s reply “That’s Irish coffee.” In 1942 the Irish coffee was born.

The above recipe was perfected in 1952 by the team at San Francisco’s Buena Vista Cafe. We proudly serve Irish coffee in the very same manner.
